Co-presented with Slivovica Productions and Transformation Projects, the team Caravan has collaborated with in the past to bring you the festive and community-building events such as Ederlezi Balkan Brass Festival, Opa Tsupa! and Mariachi Trubaci, among others.
Inspired by “Supra”, the Georgian tradition of gathering around a feast table and participating in folk songs, music, and dance, we bring this experience to Vancouver showcasing four cultures’ different ways of celebrating community life.
At this event, you will enjoy a long-table dinner while performances occur all around you. This all-analog event brings you 4 hours of continuous live music, with sporadic dancing opportunities. You are invited to relax in your seat and enjoy the music, or get up and join the spontaneous dances, or move your seat (after finishing the feast meal) to watch one of the bands closer-up while huddling with new friends!
PERFORMERS:
Onefourfive (Seattle) – To celebrate the inspiration for this festival, we welcome the Georgian polyphonic singing group “onefourfive”. The group also demonstrates Georgian folk dancing, truly one of the most spectacular dance traditions in the world.
Salash Tamburica (Vancouver) – Presenting tamburica string band music from the taverns of northern Serbia. Get ready to dance!
Princeton Porch Party (Princeton) – Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaat lead an ensemble of spectacular singers and musicians from across the pacific northwest to showcase English sea shanties, pub songs, and other traditional genres.
Forrás Banda (Vancouver/Seattle) – Peasant folk music from Hungary and Transylvania play on violins, violas, double-bass and cimbalom. Guest dancers and singers join Forrás Banda in traditional “Asztali Nóták” (table songs).
Features of the event:
* 4-course catered dinner seated at long tables – hosted by Chef Ianna.
* Cash bar featuring natural and wild fermented wine from British Columbia, including hand-selected wines from Orofino, Clos du Soliel, Liber, Sunday in August, Forbidden Fruit, and Zanatta. Other spirits, Off The Rail draft beer, and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages.
* Sausages by JN&Z Deli and late-night snacks available for purchase.
* Georgian singing and dancing workshops on Saturday afternoon, led by Onefourfive. Info on the workshops will be announced closer to the event.
This venue is wheelchair accessible. This event is all ages and we encourage families to come.
Doors open at 6pm, the music and long-table-dinner begin at 7pm. Late entry ticket holders ($20) are welcome to join at 9pm, when all 4 performing groups start their second set (invite your friends who can’t make the dinner!
