THE LONGING SKY PROJECT IS A SERIES OF UNIQUE WORLD MUSIC CONCERTS PRESENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE VANCOUVER INTERCULTURAL ORCHESTRA: www.vi-co.org

The project will be hosting international guest stars Dhruba Ghosh and Harrie Starreveld for a series of workshops, recitals and educational presentations that will culminate in the world premiere of Moshe Denburg’s double concerto for sarangi, shakuhachi and intercultural orchestra.  Below is the schedule of events.

Encounter: Sarangi Meets Shakuhachi

A recital featuring Dhruba Ghosh (sarangi – a classical North Indian bowed string instrument), Harrie Starreveld (shakuhachi – Japanese bamboo flute), and VICO musicians Reza Honari (kamanche – Persian bowed string instrument), and Niel Golden (tabla – Indian hand drums), in which these virtuoso performers will use improvisational structures to explore the ragas and modes of Indian, Japanese and Persian musical traditions.

Music of the Whole World: Reaching for the Sky

A public educational presentation, featuring Canadian composer (and VICO co-artistic director) Moshe Denburg with guests Dhruba Ghosh and Harrie Starreveld and other VICO musicians. In this show-and-tell demonstration, the artists will discuss the composition and rehearsal process for The Longing Sky, Moshe’s new double concerto for shakuhachi, sarangi and intercultural orchestra, and will offer a “sneak preview” of the upcoming world premiere performance.

A full-scale concert featuring the 21-piece Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra with Dhruba Ghosh and Harrie Starreveld, performing the world premiere performance of The Longing Sky, a double concerto by Moshe Denburg in which solo sarangi and shakuhachi will be accompanied by Western string instruments (3 violin, 2 viola, 2 cello, bass), 3 Chinese bowed string instruments (gaohu, erhu, zhonghu), 2 Persian bowed strings (kamanches), 3 plucked and struck strings (tar, santur, and ruan/daruan), tabla, hand and small percussion, and tambura. The programme will also include the Canadian premiere of Peony Dreams by Lan Tung, and an arrangement for intercultural orchestra, by VICO composer Mark Armanini, of Within You and Without You by George Harrison.

Renowned sarangi (North Indian bowed string) virtuoso Dhruba Ghosh will give a solo recital of traditional ragas, accompanied by VICO tabla master Niel Golden. This is a rare opportunity to hear classical Indian music delivered by one of the world’s foremost performers on the sarangi.
