Vancouver’s GAMELAN GITA ASMARA present their annual spectacular show, featuring over 20 musicians and dancers, led by Balinese musical director I Wayan Sudirina, group director Dr. Michael Tenzer, and dancer Ni Putu Widiantini. This performance will feature the classical dance Legong Kuntul, with guests Keiko Ninomiya, and, direct from Bali, 15-year-old dance prodigy Putu Suci Pramesti; and the powerhouse Wiranjaya, a torpedo of crashing gongs and intense movement. Gita Asmara will introduce Sphinx, choreographed and performed by Justine A. Chambers – a light on the Canadian contempory dance scene – with genre-bending music by group founder Michael Tenzer. Balinese music director Wayan Sudirana unleashes two pyrotechnic instrumentals: Tabuh Pisan Bhaskara, a smash at last year’s concerts, is back glowing hotter; and they let loose Sekar Susun, which melds all the wildest Balinese music styles of the past 50 years – the ones that made the place as famous as it is.
