Through the rhythms of singing, dancing, and the use of nine calabashes, the 9-women group, Les Aunties lead a spectacle that bridges the deepest African traditions and spirituality with modern inclusivity, performing with both traditional percussion as well as drumpads and DJ consoles. It’s a danced musical manifesto for women’s freedom, originating from Chad in West Central Africa.
The music is a blend of rhythms and chants from the Sahel region, sung in Sara and in Arabic. When mixed with electronic music, they create an Afrofuturistic sound.
Recognized for their talent, the Aunties, like other Chadian women, present themselves in this project as resilient heroines of society. They are nine women from the south of Chad who have escaped family violence to move to the city of Ndjamena.
