Caravan is once again excited to bring the Tuvan folk music legends Huun Huur Tu back to Vancouver, after a 5-year absence! With special guests opening act, The Ryuzen Trio featuring Alcvin Ramos.
The whistling of the high-mountain wind forms eerie overtones and postmodern statement. The repeated thrum of a string against wood and hide turns into a meditative, evocative figure straight from the avant garde. The descendents of isolated Siberian herdsmen make serious, strangely universal music out of some of the planets quirkiest acoustics.
The Tuvan acoustic quartet Huun Huur Tu prove that Tuvan music can take plenty of intelligent innovation. Using traditional instruments and drawing subtly on 20th-century composers, funky rhythms, and the decades they spent honing their overtone singing, Huun Huur Tu transform ancient songs into complex acoustic compositions. Beginning over seventeen years ago, Huun Huur Tu has almost single-handedly introduced the outside world to the boundless wealth of Tuvan traditions, thanks in great part to their superior musicianship.

The Ryuzen Trio was formed by shakuhachi musician, Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos in Vancouver, BC/ The Ryuzen Trio plays original compositions of Alcvin. The band’s root is based on Japanese aesthetic from the Japanese shakuhachi & shamisen musics (zen, folk, ensemble music), but like bamboo has the flexibilty to bend and flex with other traditions and forms. The Ryuzen Trio is joined by superlative percussionist, Curtis Andrews (mrdangam, kanjira, kit) and multi-instrumentalist Greg Valou (guitar, hurdy-gurdy, hang). The Ryuzen Trio expresses the experience of the shakuhachi moving through the world.
Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos is one of the leading teachers and performers of the shakuhachi in North America. A composer, shamisen player, and multi-instrumentalist, Alcvin has taught and performed internationally and pursues an active solo as well as collaborative career, sharing the stage with many distinguished artists. Alcvin lives on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of BC where he makes shakuhachi flutes and teaches at his home at the Bamboo-In Shakuhachi Retreat Centre.
