Co-presented with MODO Live. The “Hourglass” tour.
Antibalas (Spanish for “bulletproof”) is an American, Brooklyn-based afrobeat band founded in 1998 by Martín Perna. Initially inspired by Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri’s Harlem River Drive Orchestra, the music generally follows the musical architecture and language of afrobeat and incorporates elements of jazz, funk, dub, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and West Africa.
Their sets are packed with free-flowing jams led by charismatic frontman Abraham Amayo, whose call-and-response choruses are infectiously catchy. From the pulsating percussion to the funk-driven horns, every aspect of Antibalas’ show is brimming with energy that gives ticket buyers a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
This concert will feature their new recording, “Hourglass”. On Hourglass, Antibalas returns to its instrumental roots. Previous albums featured topic songs addressing patriarchy, climate change, militarism, late stage capitalism, oligarchy, white ethnonationalism, and the genocide. HOURGLASS is an instrumental meditation of these themes, this time speaking through melody and rhythm.
BACKGROUND HISTORY:
Saxophonist Martin Perna formed Antibalas in Brooklyn in 1998. The core of 12 members created a repertoire of original afrobeat jams that incorporated elements of jazz and funk. During their first year, the band played only non-commercial gigs like community markets, rooftops, and block parties. Starting in August 1999 they held a weekly Friday night residency at Manhattan’s NoMoore. After the club closed its doors in 2001, they began building a reputation as a must-see touring act, playing over 1,500 shows in 30 countries. In 2008 they were recruited to compose the music and arrangements for the Broadway musical “Fela!”, which chronicles the life of afrobeat originator Fela Kuti. The show was a smash success — it racked up 11 Tony Award nominations and three wins, and many of the group’s members played in the house band on its touring productions. Since 2000 Antibalas has released five studio albums, including their critically acclaimed 2012 self-titled release. Though the group has consistently recorded and performed together, many members play with the Dap Kings, who have collaborated with artists including Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, and Mark Ronson. Other members have recorded or performed with Paul Simon, The Roots, The Black Keys, Spoon, and TV On The Radio.
