Two-night fiesta of Latin / Mexican vibes from Montreal to Vancouver.
Friday, July 11: Locarno (Vancouver)
Saturday, July 12: El Balcón (Montreal)

Get ready for a unique weekend of music and dance as “Fandango en Victoria” takes over The Coda on July 11 and 12. This special two-night event will showcase the vibrant sounds of two of Canada’s premier Latin and Mexican-inspired bands: Locarno (Vancouver) and El Balcón (Montreal).

A fandango is a tradition from Veracruz, Mexico, similar to an old time music gathering or an Irish Ceilidh. There is traditional Son Jarocho music, food and drink, and set dancing.

Tickets are separate for each night. Visit The Coda website to purchase tickets. www.gotothecoda.com

MORE ABOUT EL BALCON:
El Balcón is a Montreal based band who play traditional Mexican Folk fused with Balkan and Eastern influences. This prolific group began by making creative arrangements of traditional tunes from Mexico, where lead singer Valeria Del Marre comes from. They have evolved to composing strictly original and innovative music that still keeps the acoustic spirit of the traditional music that inspires them. Mexican folk instruments like the Jarana, Reguinto and “La Tarima” (Polyrhythm foot board for traditional rhythmic dancing) blend with microtonal melodies of the east on the violin and oud. All grounded with the earthy touch of an upright bass and an array of masterful percussion including cajon, riqq, pandero, and Kijada del Burro (donkey jaw bone). They are creating quite the buzz in Canada with showcases at performances at Calgary Folk Fest, Starbelly Jam, and tours across BC, Ontario, and Quebec.

ABOUT LOCARNO:
Locarno is a high energy Mexican folk fusion band lead by Tom Landa, who is best known for his work with The Paperboys. They have a new album out called ‘Colibrí Caliope’, and were recently nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award. the band has honed in on their sound and incorporated more of their influences such as music from Colombia, African Soukous, Mexican Marimba Music, Venezuelan Joropo and Brazilian Forro Music. Perhaps where the band shines the most is in the live shows which features Tom Landa on jaranas and guitars, Kalissa Landa on violin, Robin Layne on marimba, congas and timbales, Pedro Mota on guitar an vocals, Aaron McKinney on bass, Liam MacDonald on drums, congas and pandero, Mark D’Angelo on trumpet and Nick La Rivere on trombone.
